Claudio Martini

Cooperation between Business and Society in Tuscany

Claudio Martini is the President of the Tuscan Regional Government. Before tackling high-level responsibilities at the Tuscan Region, Claudio Martini was a well-known political figure as the Mayor of Prato. During these years of crucial importance for the launching of the Province of Prato, he promoted several important projects. One of the initiatives for which he feels a special pride was the Pact of Friendship sealed with the City of Sarajevo.

Elected to the Regional Council for the first time in 1995 as a candidate of the Democratic Party of the Left, Martini was made Assessor for Health and Welfare.  In the course of his term he extensively revamped regional health services.  Several regional laws were passed under Martini's supervision to streamline the organization of health services in Tuscany and, above all, progressively to eliminate a serious regional health service deficit.

Martini represented the Committee of the Regions at the European Convention. After serving as a member of the President's office in September 2002 he was nominated President of the Conference of Remote Maritime Regions in Europe. Fervently committed to the issues of globalisation, he is the driving force behind the meeting, ‘From global to glocal', an annual event in Pisa.
