Carbon Sequestration in the Amazonas

Maria Dalmalm with Kaj Embrén

DHL has begun a collaboration with eight Amazon Indian tribes to plant trees on cooperatively owned land. The resulting carbon sink will be offered to DHL customers. As part of the collaboration DHL helps to develop job opportunities, as well as education and health services for the native people.

Respect, an international consultancy, is a partner with DHL in this endeavour. Respect has initiated BLICC – Business Leaders Initiative on Climate Change – to assist companies in reducing greenhouse gases and developing innovative tools of new, green value-added services to meet the challenges of climate change.

How did it start? How will it work? Will DHL’s customers be interested?
In this workshop Maria Dahlman, DHL, and Kaj Embrén, Respect, will present an extraordinary, ground-breaking and creative business idea.

Maria Dalmalm graduated with a BSc in Chemistry from Karlstad University in 1995 having included a Minor Field Study in the rainforest of Saba, Borneo.

Her first job was with a waste management company dealing with quality and environmental issues, standards and legislation. In 1995 she moved to DHL as Head of Quality and Environment for Sweden 2000 and Deputy Head of Corporate Citizenship of Nordic 2003. Maria has worked as Environmental Citizenship Manager since 2003 for DHL Express Europe.

Kaj Embrén is a partner and co-founder of Respect, a values-based consultancy with offices in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm and London, where he heads the projects that are making Respect’s vision to create a sustainable world become reality.
